New Generation Accomplishments
The club’s strategic plan for New Generation focused on the youth at the club’s “adopted school” and a tennis program for underprivileged children. Initiatives included collaborating with the UH Rotaracts and Interact clubs for joint projects to foster a collegial relationship. A club director attends Rotaract meetings and supports their projects. The following projects were completed and some continues to be in progress:
Rejuvenate the garden at Jefferson Elementary- The club built a garden for the school 10 years ago. The goal was to have the children take care of the garden as a continuing project. However, this project was ignored and left in disarray. At the beginning of the year, the club revisited the garden and collaborated with the Environmental Teacher, who was very interested in working with the children to increase their awareness of “caring for the earth.” The project was started in 3 phases, completing the project with plants that the children can care for and take some pride for their work. This project will offer an intercultural partnership program because the children will plant a tree in the garden and elementary children in Romania will plant the same type of tree in a Romania Elementary School.
Support the Hawaii Tennis Program (HITS) for Underprivileged Children- Our club worked with the HITS program to hang wind screens at Palolo Tennis Park, re-strung tennis racquets, donated tennis outfits and provided financial support so that the program could continue to be available for tennis for the underprivileged children in the Palolo Housing area. UH Rotaracts, Club Members from our club and another Rotary club, along with Families from the HITS program volunteered to complete the project. The day ended well with a tennis clinic by a professional tennis instructor.
Mentor a New Generation Intern from Cairo- A student from Cairo was hosted by one of the members who mentored the student in a work study environment. Oher Rotarians and non-Rotarians opened their work places to do the same. The student expressed her appreciation for the valuable experience she gained.
Support Literacy with Donated Books to the Jefferson Elementary Library- The club provided funding to the school’s librarian to purchase books for the school. Every speaker at the club’s meeting signs a book which is donated in the speaker’s honor, placed in the library for the children to enjoy.
Support Dictionaries for 3rd Graders- The Club gave out dictionaries to 3 schools and donated back packs to the schools during the school year. The back packs were filled with school supplies for the children.
Collaborate with the Youth for HUGS- The Club reached out to the Interact and Rotaract Clubs to work on a joint community program. The members donated mugs that the students, along with club members, decorated. They filled the mugs with goodies prior to a meeting and stayed to attend the club meeting. The mugs were taken to the HUGS House for families during their Respite Night Off.
Support Youth Scholarship- The Club donated funds to HRYF and RYLA. A student was selected for the $5K HRYF Scholarship. The club also donated to RYLA to support a student attending the RYLA program.
Support Langley Ukulele Ensemble- The Club supported this talented young musical group from Canada for a performance at Dave and Buster and invited other Rotary clubs who enjoyed the entertainment and fellowship.
