PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

Aloha my fellow Rotarians,

Rotary's focus in May is on the fifth avenue of service - Youth Service. Rotary believes in developing the next generation of leaders. Rotary programs help younger leaders build leadership skills, expand education and learn the value of service through Interact, Rotaract, Rotary Youth Leadership Awards, Rotary Youth Exchange and New Generations Service Exchange.

Our Club has been working on a lot of youth initiatives in the last few years. In the next few weeks we will be highlighting some of the work in this avenue of service.

RECAP OF LAST WEEK'S MEETING - April 29

Last week's speaker was Dr. Samir El Swaify who talked to us about Hawaii's living soil. Samir shared a lot of interesting facts about soil and its classification. If you missed it, please check out his presentation here.

n addition to the great presentation, one of our members, Patricia Nevada has been recognized with the Paul Harris award.

This week's speaker will be Dr. Rich Courson, who will talk about PolioPlus.

Rich Courson joined the Rotary Club of Ala Moana in 1985. He has continually been involved in various aspects of the club and has held various Board Member and Officer positions over the years.

He became a Paul Harris Fellow in 1992. He was President of his club in 2015-16. Rich became the Polio Plus Chair for District 5000 in 2019 until present.

His passion in Rotary is The Rotary Foundation with emphasis on Polio Plus and Global Grants

INTRODUCING OUR NEWEST MEMBER

Maria has been attending RCHS's meetings for the last few weeks and will be inducted as a new member on May 13th.

New member Maria Melrose writes:

Here is a bit about me: I have been transitioning from San Francisco to Honolulu. I work internationally with a primary focus on the Pacific Rim. I was traveling a lot to Asia and calling on my customers in Hawaii 4 times a year, staying in hotels. I have been here since August and decided everything works better from here, I am happier here, more balanced. So I am becoming a permanent resident here, transitioning my family over in the process.

I work with architects, designers and distributors and represent suppliers who make products these people specify; my focus is mostly furniture for workplace, healing spaces, hospitality but I also do some higher ed and government projects. I also have a wonderful outdoor umbrella product because in Hawaii many of my projects are outdoor, or open air. Sustainability and wellness in the built environment are important concepts to me. I spend a lot of time in Japan and am always working on my Japanese, have started working on my Korean. I studied foreign languages in university and enjoy people from other countries and cultures very much.

With my kids I was extremely involved in the community and it is important to me to be involved wherever I am. My girls and I did National Charity League, which I think as an organization does more volunteer hours than any other group in the US. And boy, are they well organized when it comes to not wasting any volunteer time!

Rotary interests me both for its international reach and how deep the roots go here. I am incredibly impressed with the devotion to end polio and like that scale of a mission. I am living in Waikiki and want to take a look at a few of the clubs and see which one I might fit best, and/or be able to help the most.

Registration is open for the 2021 Virtual Convention.

The 2021 Virtual Convention will be better than ever, opening more innovative opportunities to learn and to engage with the family of Rotary, near and far. You’ll be able to network in virtual lounges, meet new partners in service, and join fun activities with Rotary members from around the world.

This event is open to all Rotary members and participants from 12-16 June 2021. Registration fees are as follows:

Promotional rate: US$49* through 11:59:59 (Chicago time - CDT) 7 May
US$65 - 8 May through 16 June

*Registration must be paid in full between 16 April and 7 May to receive the US$49 rate.

COMMUNITY SERVICE PROJECT--WOMEN IN NEED ANNUAL CLOTHING DRIVE

Our Rotary Club of Honolulu Sunset is conducting a clothing drive for the women residents of the Women in Need Homes during the month of April. We have conducted this drive for the past several years and will present the clothing and other donated items on a Saturday event with our members at the Aiea home in early May. Items that may be donated include:

- New or used women or children clothing items in all sizes.

- Wearable Women shoes, hand bags, or purses

- Women accessories

- If you have other items to donate please call me first to see if they can use them

When you have your donations ready you can bring them to our Thursday meeting or call Glen Bailey at 392-7170 for pick-up.

UPCOMING INTERNATIONAL SERVICE TRIP PROJECT

Attached you will find details about our 2021 District International Service Trip to Nepal and Bhutan, scheduled for Oct 22 to Nov 4.

To register for the trip, please visit https://rotaryd5000.org/sitepage/nepal.

Due to the limited space of 30 persons, priority will be given to Rotarians of clubs who have contributed to the current or previous global grants in Nepal or Bhutan and also to Rotarians who have specialty training or expertise in secondary education, agricultural science, veterinary science, soil science, land surveying, or other applied science subjects. For additional questions, please feel free to contact our Nepal Workgroup Chair Arjun Aryal or myself. Toward the end of next month, we will host an informational meeting for those who have registered.

Join us for our Club's meeting on Saturday, May 20, 2021!

Ed Futa, Past General Secretary and Chief Operating Officer Rotary International and the Rotary Foundation will be our guest speaker on Zoom.

This is an event you don't want to miss!

The Friends of the Library book store - Village Books and Music at Ward is still on until at least the end of May and there a lots of books still waiting to be bought, not to mention vinyl records and artwork!

The bookstore is open from 10 am - 7 pm, Tuesday - Sunday. It's where the old Pier 1 imports used to be, below Nordstrom rack in Kakaako. It's a calm, cool oasis to browse for your favorite book, vinyl record or even artwork.

Proceeds go to fund special requests from all 51 State of Hawaii libraries.
