The gym at Palolo Valley District Park as seen from the upper parking lot. The volunteers begin to arrive on Saturday morning. Job assignment badges prepared by organizer Leilani Magee are ready to go. Nothing brings out the volunteers like a good supply of snackin' goodies, which included homemade breakfast burritos by Johnny Sanchez. Leilani Magee from Hawaiian Isles Tennis (HIT) reads off the job assignments. Leilani lines up the volunteers to explain her plans for the day.
The other half of the volunteer line-up listens intently as Samir El-Swaify takes Leilani's picture. Mr. Calvin Say, Speaker of the House in the Hawaii State Legislature, joined us for this combined volunteer clean-up effort. Brent Kam-Young joins his Honolulu Sunset Club Rotarian dad, Doug (background), in the painting part of today's project. Priming over some remaining graffiti and getting the sprayer ready. You can see why the outside walls of the gym need a fresh coat of paint. This is how it looked when we arrived.
There was lots of outside clean-up work to be done too. Here, Honolulu Sunset Rotary Club President Paul Jurcsak wields his trusty weedwhacker. Speaker Calvin Say dug right in to the much-needed weeding and trash clean-up around the tennis courts. A regular visitor to the Honolulu Sunset Club from San Diego, Rotarian Sheri Snively lends a hand with the area clean-up. Sunset Club Rotarian and Past President, Samir El-Swaify works at the daunting task of clearing some of the overgrown weeds and grass. Sunset Club Community Service Director Johnny Sanchez helps with clean-up of the tennis court surfaces.
While work continued outside, tennis Pro Leilani Magee teaches Sunset Rotarians Anna Fishburn and Nancy Manley how to replace worn out grips on tennis racquets. Rotarian Anna Fishburn applies a new grip. Many more racquets await this type of make-over. With her skills improving by the minute, Anna now shows fellow Sunset Rotarians Johnny Sanchez and Gloria Lao how it's done. Some tote baskets needed softer handles which were being applied by Rotarians Samir El-Swaify and Rosa Chen. Meanwhile, progress is being made on the exterior painting as the finish spray coat starts to be applied by Eddie Gerlich, trusty WYC employee who assists with set-up of our club meetings each week.
Making progress now! The sprayer, and Eddie, does an excellent job. Finishing touches applied by Betsy Kubota and Sunset Rotarian Liz Kane. Sunset Rotarian Harry Kubota applies primer where needed on the back wall of the gymnasium. The patchwork quilt look of the back wall before the final coat is applied. All volunteers take a mid-morning break and assemble on the tennis court for a group photo along with our sponsors' signs.
Back at work again, Sunset Rotarian President Paul Jurcsak points to one lucky gecko that avoided the dreaded weedwhacker. ...and there he is! Made it through that harrowing experience to help rid of us flies for another day. A look back from the tennis court shows the back wall of the gym about half done. Finishing touches are applied as we near completion of the painting portion of our day, while the clean-up crew continues their efforts. The painting may be finished but all the brushes, rollers, pans, and sprayer now have to be cleaned. Eddie Gerlich supplied all of his own equipment and is still hard at work.
A well deserved rest and lunch break is taken as the project wraps up for the day. The finished look of the first wall, emphasized by the clean and trimmed look of the lawn. Hey...look mo bettah! Finished look of the back wall. Grounds are trimmed and clean of all debris back here too. This is the far side of the gym that still needs to be painted. That's our NEXT project. We'll be back!
